Seams

There are two types of seam. Those in fully fashioned stockings which are a necessary part of the manufacture of the stocking (top picture), and those which are sewn into circular knit stockings for effect (middle picture).

Fully fashioned stockings have always been more expensive/desireable than circular knit or seamfree stockings. You can tell if a pair of seamed stockings are fully fashioned by the keyhole at the top of the seam. For nearly a century seamfree stockings have had a seam sewn in to make them look like fully fashioned (bottom picture).

For day wear seams are usually the same colour as the stocking though they appear darker because of the density of the material. Contrast seams were introduced to England from the United States after WW2 but for many years were considered 'tarty', by about 1960 they were accepted for evening wear as were coloured and metallic seams.
