Dr W. H. Carothers
Nylon

Nylon was the first truly synthetic fibre, made of phenol or benzene, extracted from coal; oxygen and nitrogen from the air; and hydrogen from water. In 1928 an American chemist, Dr W. H. Carothers, began a very close study of synthetic materials which might lead to the production of man-made fabrics comparable with nature's own silk and wool. The name "nylon" was coined by the Du Pont Company of America to describe a series of these products derived from minerals. The product was patented in 1937 and mass production of nylon stockings began in the USA in 1940.
